Much to Alys’ disapproval, Alinor sees James but only to tell him their child did not survive, and for him never to seek her out again. On the same day as James’ arrival at the warehouse, an Italian lady, Livia, also shows up with a nursemaid and a baby, Matteo, claiming to be the widow of Alinor’s son, Rob, who had allegedly drowned in the dark tides of a lagoon in Venice, where he had been residing and practicing as a doctor. Unbeknown to him however, Alinor had been made extremely ill following her Witch Trial ordeal, and Alys, protecting her mother from him, religiously destroyed the letters without being read, and pocketing the money herself.

Twenty-one years later, Sir James Avery (previously known as James Summer) arrives in south London, in one of the poorest areas in search of Alinor his one-time lover, as well as tutor to Walter, son of the local lord, Sir William Peachey, but also to Alinor’s son Rob, who prior to his apprenticeship was companion to Walter.Īlthough James had not defended Alinor at the time when she needed him the most, he had tried to make recompense by writing to her annually and sending money to help support his child. I look forward to reading the next book in the series as I was left waiting to find out more. When at the end of “Tidelands” (reviewed 18/07/21) Alinor, and her daughter Alys, leave Foulmire in southern England in shame and disgrace, her brother, Ned, no longer able to face his neighbours leaves England, whilst her son, Rob, returns to Chichester to complete his apprenticeship as an apothecary. I enjoyed the story quite a bit! I found it to have quite a bit of set up in the beginning and then the story starts picking up speed.

This is during the time that Brits guilty of practicing Catholicism could be arrested and most likely found guilty of whatever and put to death.

she makes a decision to assist a fugitive of the ongoing religious war that is taking place in Britain. Alinor copes the best she can with a “missing husband” that she would appreciate remaining missing. I just love historical thrillers! I could tell right away that the story was setting up a new series that I’m sure will garner many new readers to the story about Alinor and her children. I have not read this author’s novels previously. A perilous time for women, especially women who could easily be pointed out as a witch. TIDELANDS by Philippa Gregory is a historical mystery that will transport you back in time to the mid-sixteen hundreds.
